Lasdun at the National Theatre

If looking for a great spot for a pre-theatre meal that completely avoids the usual stuffy, over-complicated restaurant feeling, The Lasdun at the National Theatre is a good choice. From the moment of arrival, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. It is definitely not a pretentious dining experience in the slightest. Starting off with the Guinea Fowl and Tamworth terrine, served with pickled carrots, mustard, and some wonderful freshly baked bread, the plate was packed with flavour and the pickles provided just the right amount of tang. For my main course, the Slow-roast Hereford (roast beef) served alongside bobby beans and mustard was equally tasty and comforting. However, the highlight of the meal was the dessert: a wonderfully simple yet elegant Buttermilk set cream with roasted peaches and shortbread. At £32 for two courses (with a very reasonable £6 additional for dessert), it is good value for the quality of food served. Returning for another pre-theatre meal is a certainty.
