Let me start by saying I have eaten here many times and never had an issue, but because of the seriousness of my last visit I feel it only right to warn others. My Mum has Coeliacs disease and as such has to eat a gluten free diet. We ordered a gluten free sharing platter to start and it arrived with several different types of bread piled high. Being suspicious that there was such a selection of gluten free bread - and nobody to ask as the restaurant was so busy - I advised my mum to only eat the white sliced bread as I know that is their usual gluten free variety. That was the first mistake as it was packed either side by other bread. For main course mum ordered fish and chips. As soon as it arrived we questioned it as usually the fish batter is pale and different In texture to normal batter, but we were assured that this was gluten free. I'm not sure why we trusted the chef with this one- as anyone who works in a kitchen and passes off normal bread for gluten free is probably not going to be bothered which type of batter they serve. My Mum was violently ill for the following 48 hours. If she had had an allergy rather than an intolerance i genuinely dread to think what the outcome would have been. If your health depends on a special diet, my advice would be to stay well away!

And so, it was with a good sense of anticipation that I visited Farndon Boathouse with my wife and two young children on a beautiful Friday evening in July....
