I should point out that I am only reviewing the food and drink in the restaurant and bar, for the sake of clarity. (I am sure that the excellent standard of these bodes very well for the hotel also). I have only eaten here once with my wife, mum and dad, in late 2014 just prior to the birth of my first child. I was living in Rosyth for work and we all travelled from the the east coast to the west over a weekend, to stay in Ballachulish and visit Oban for the whisky, amongst other things. Somewhat underwhelmed with the meal at a different hotel on the first night, we determined that we would have a better time of it the following night, and so we set out deliberately to Port Appin to try the Pierhouse hotel on the strength of its reviews. What a good choice that proved to be. We were made to feel welcome from the very start, shown to a table in the bar area, promptly offered and served drinks, and left to select our choices from the menu. Within 10 minutes we were seated and our starters arrived shortly after. A wonderful ham hock terrine and a smoked mackerel pâté stand out in my memory of the starters. Main meals of mussels, langoustine, smoked salmon and an expertly grilled sirloin were complemented very well with a strong and fresh Argentinian Malbec. The food gave me the distinct impression that the chef understood implicitly how to treat the dishes and give us the best food we could have possibly hoped for. It just felt so very special. But this visit lives in my memory for reasons beyond the outstanding food. It remains a beacon in my mind of a time when my family was at its happiest, a real high-water mark. About a year or so after our visit, my dad sadly started to fall ill and passed away last year, thankfully just prior to the covid pandemic taking hold. Like everyone, my mum hasn’t been able to get away, to take her mind off things and escape from grim reality and neither has anyone else in my family. But at least I know a place I’d like to take my mum, my brother, my wife and my two daughters when this is all over, so we can raise a glass and toast to happier times yet to come. I’d say it’s definitely worth the trip up over the border.
