What went wrong? I haven't been to the Thatch in a while and we decided to visit again. We left wishing we hadn't. Have had good experiences in the past, although its hard to get Sunday lunch wrong. We had a midweek meal this time. The service was okay, met all of the basic needs but when I complained about my starter I was told, thank you for letting us know we will tell the still appeared on the bill. My starter of crab cake with tom yum salad was inedible due to the amount of salt in it, and I use salt generously. I ate less than half of it as it wasn't enjoyable at all. The Tom Yum lacked all the flavours you'd expect from this dish, very bland no sour/sweet/salty holy trinity, and the peanuts weren't toasted, if you're paying these prices you expect attention to detail. The main course of duck breast arrived, for a not too inexpensive £26. It was underwhelming to say the least, we needed a steak knife to cut both the duck and strangely enough the cabbage, which was tougher than the duck, needed longer in the steamer I think. The duck cottage pie it came with was again overly salted but at least edible. There was meant to be a 'duck crisp' not sure what that was but it seemed to be missing entirely. The dish was flat, lacking flavour or anything of interest to compliment the duck, such a shame. If you go to the Thatch, keep it simple, order the steak, its harder to get that wrong.
