Just had a one night stay there. A beautiful house. A genuine old manor house with bags of character. Warm and comfortable. The rooms are lovely and can’t be faulted. The staff are all excellent, couldn’t be bettered anywhere. BUT - the food wasn’t as good as I was expecting. Appearance first class, real works of art, but the quality of the meal wasn’t great. I am dairy free, which they knew months ago. What I was given (with one tiny exception with a tuna canapé) was a vegan meal, which is not the same thing at all. It was ok, but all a bit bland. It was all screaming out for flavour, particularly the gnocchi dish which was close to tasteless - nothing on the plate with any zing at all. Almost apologetically the waiter told me that all they could offer for dessert was fruit, and a tiny portion of sliced fruit is what I got. This isn't very imaginative. Any chef could do better than that if the effort was there. At breakfast, for your toast or bread there is butter or nothing – they really should provide a margarine, especially when they know a dairy free customer is dining and is likely to have toast at breakfast. A vegan would have the same problem – dry toast. Overall, a lovely night away in a beautiful place, with excellent staff, but the food was not great. I'll go again, as the hotel and staff were excellent, and hopefully the food will be better next time.
