The Plough

My husband surprised me with a weekend away in North Yorkshire. I must admit to being surprised as our last experience at The Plough was not as good as the first few times in the 90’s when it was family owned. Then the service and food were exceptional especially the breakfasts which were enormous! The last time we went the hotel had been taken over, the food was nowhere near the standard we’d expected and the wine very expensive. This time having chosen the hotel after reading the very good reviews and it being near Settle for the railway, my husband thought it worth trying again. Our room was clean and ‘cosy’ but they were very mean with the toiletries, one shower gel, one shampoo and one body lotion for two people staying two nights. The bathroom was small with a big step up to it. Going to the bar later we discovered that the wine was still expensive, £13 for a N.Z Sauvignon Blanc. I only had the one! On the plus side, the breakfasts and the dinner were excellent. Unfortunately my husband only glanced briefly at the bill when paying and only later discovered that there was a 10% service charge which included the drinks we were served at the bar making my glass of wine £14.30! Lovely as the location is and as nice as the staff were, it’s not somewhere we will stay again.
