The Old Crown Coaching Inn

A group of four of us ate in the Ballroom, and I have to say it was the most disappointing meal we have had out for many years! It took ages for the food to come out, which we found surprising as the restaurant was virtually empty. The Ham Hock starters were ok if a little uninspiring, they had however burnt one side of the thin toast - and tried to hide it on the underside, hoping perhaps we would not notice! When the main courses eventually came out, I had the Pri-Pri Chicken which I sent back as it was so over cooked and dry to the point of being inedible. The skinny fries were also dry as a bone. Someone from the kitchen came out to speak to us, and said in their opinion they couldn't see anything wrong with it !!! Two of our party had the Brixham fish and Chips. The fish was mostly batter, and the chips were again very dry. If you want good fish and chips go to the Harbor Fish and Chip shop around the corner. My replacement meal eventually arrived (after the other three in our party had finished eating) and was much better, it had obviously been freshly cooked and the chicken was not overdone. This dish however does need some sort of coleslaw or relish on the side. Needless to say we did not order any deserts, even though they said they would offer us a small discount! On a positive side, the waitresses were very polite, however even though they did not charge me for my main course, it was a very disappointing evening out, made even worse as it was a special occasion. Needless to say we will not be returning.
