The Countryman

I visited The Countryman while staying nearby for work and ended up having one of the best pub meals I've had in a long time. Although I was dining alone, the staff made me feel incredibly welcome. I didn't catch her name, but the trainee waitress was especially kind and attentive, even offering me water without me having to ask. She, along with the rest of the team, were professional, friendly, and genuinely cared about making sure everything was perfect. You can really tell it's a well-run, family-run business. The pub sits comfortably in the mid-price range, but the quality of the food is exceptional. As a Whitby local, I'm pretty fussy when it comes to fish and chips, but these were absolutely first-class. The batter was light and crisp, the fish was beautifully flaky and moist, and not at all greasy. The chips were incredible too – proper chunky chips cooked to perfection. I also started with the scallops, and they were honestly the best I've had in a very long time. Such a pleasant surprise to find seafood of that quality so far from the coast. The restaurant itself has a lovely relaxed atmosphere, and it's clear that everyone takes real pride in what they do. I'll definitely be returning the next time I'm in the area.
