This is my third visit to Lyons. On the first visit we had the tasting menu, which for the price we simply couldn’t justify. The food was okay but not “wow” or particularly consistent, and sadly, we found the recommended wine pairing really bad. After that we didn’t think we’d be back for a long while but before casting judgement, it’s always good to go again.
So, I popped in myself for a second time, utilising the lunch deal. I found this visit fantastic, worth the price, and had a great martini.
Singing its praises now, I dragged my wife back this week. Oysters were magnificent, probably the best I’ve had. We also had the bread, the cabbage, the stew and the Hake.
Unfortunately, the fish stew was a bit lacklustre, we were expecting more than just 2 fish in the stew for the price and the mussels were overpowered by the broth itself. They lacked their natural sweetness. The fennel in it was delicious though and the Fregula was a nice touch.
The Hake was unfortunately overcooked and accompanying samphire veg far too salty. To be honest the hake from The Kings Head up the road was cooked far better, came with lovely potatoes and way more affordable.
For a seafood restaurant, it’d be great to see some more options on the menu. Am always trying to find Scottish razor clams and cockles but rarely see them anywhere.
The dessert (Cheesecake Tart) was excellent.
The reason for the 3 stars is that it is a bit hit and miss, not quite substantial enough and at eye watering prices. If it was more affordable it’d be a 5.
I think popping in for Oysters and a drink is definitely worthwhile, as is their 2 course deals.
I will no doubt be back at some point as the staff are great, the restaurant is lovely and the menu does seem to change quite frequently.
