5 North Street

During our visit to the Cotswolds this weekend, we booked to eat at 5 North Street to experience the cuisine of Marcus Ashenford. On arrival, we did not know what to expect as online pictures did not show the dining room. I had thought there might have been tablecloths but the black tables were plainly laid although they matched the general ambience of the restaurant which was warm and cosy. We elected to experience the 7-course tasting menu and the very good staff took our order. There is no wine pairing for the tasting menu (something to consider in future?) so we ordered a bottle of Malbec (as venison was on the menu) and a lovely chardonnay. Each and every element of the tasting menu was sublime! The 'amuse bouche' was a take on a welsh rarebit and was utterly delicious as was the root vegetable soup that followed. Fresh bread had already been served as two 'mini loaves' - one brown and one white. Fabulous, especially with the choice of whipped beef dripping or salted French butter. As each course arrived, we were treated to exquisite flavours beautifully presented. This chef is a true master of his craft - no wonder his book is called 'Flavour'! A totally memorable experience and I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant for its elegant charm, the great service and the outstanding cuisine. You can see from my photos (sorry for the quality but lighting was nicely low) that there was much to enjoy.
