Decided to visit the Manor for afternoon tea for two. Arriving via the long drive the Manor is an imposing building with nearly a thousand years of history behind it. Looks the part from the outside and inside does not disappoint either. Staff very helpful and we were seated within minutes. The tearoom was very large with lots of space between the tables, however, sadly the atmosphere was well, lacking. You would expect the crockery used would be in keeping with the Manor unfortunately that was not the case. The tea plate was decorative and a good start and that’s where it ended, teacups more reminisce of days gone by of canteen cups and saucers, plain white and sturdy. Afternoon teas are special and that means the settings are important. The tea arrived and that was fine, the afternoon tea was brought as you would expect on a cake stand, with the contents nicely displayed. Now the time to enjoy the finger sandwiches, the normal ham and cheese and I think salmon, but not sure be honest. Then the surprise hidden within the cucumber sandwich, never before have I had a cucumber and hummus one. I did have to ask what it was and will ensure in future to avoid this, everyone to their own taste of course. On to the scones and they were good, nice and warm, great with the jam and clotted cream. Finally, the cakes, small selection most ok apart from what I can best describe as a mini cheesecake, there is no way you could pick this up with your fingers, only a knife would do, poor choice and not suitable for afternoon tea. We have over the years experienced many afternoon teas of varying standards and for us the location and style are important, and the food must be of high quality. On this occasion unfortunately the Manor did not make the grade.
